Like a God
Digital documentary portrait consisting of
7 photographs.

Learning photography from a hardened professional is a massive challenge. Attempts to fully control the camera for the first time reveals itself in a dominating perspective over the subject matter. Much like a god, complete control will dominate anything within view.

This was my first time trying true purist documentary photography with a digital camera. I was assisted by a professional photographer who was brutally honest in the way she taught. This caused me to involuntarily control the composition of the photos when shot. They were mostly shot at the Ross Barnet Reservoir and the Belhaven University Campus. Having the required contact sheets took 8 different photo shoots with most not having any impactful photos. Ultimately, these were selected from nearly 1000 photos.

The photographer along with the photo class critiqued the many contact sheets and eliminated a great many. It was in turn, very difficult to piece together a vision for what I wanted the project to be. Ultimately, once the photos were selected, I was able to find a commonality and realized the perspective of the photographs themselves unified them.

The photos were printed in 8.5x11 and professionally mounted to 4ply solid core matte board and then mounted to a much larger 8ply solid core matte board. These were shown at the semester photo critique and eventually displayed at my senior exhibition "Circadian".
